In Philadelphia on January 28th the Wildcats lost to the Golden Eagles in conference play, 82-78. Villanova kept it competitive, going into halftime up 46-36, but Marquette came out strong in the second half and took it away at the end.

A couple items of note about these two teams: Marquette was ranked higher in the RPI (#10 to #78). The Wildcats home court advantage should have been a factor, but the Golden Eagles were already streaking, winning 5 out of 5. The Wildcats had already seen the Golden Eagles this year and had lost to them 81-77.

Marquette paced themselves with a statistical advantage in offensive rebounding and turnover margin.

Marquette pulled down 17 big offensive rebounds compared to 13 by Villanova, and that created a shooting gap. There was a gap in turnovers, with 16 for the Golden Eagles and 20 for the Wildcats.

JayVaughn Pinkston led the losing effort for the Wildcats with 17 points on 50% shooting in 28 minutes.
