Louisville's Gorgui Dieng has won the StatSheet Big East Player of the Week award for the week ending January 30th. Maurice Harkless from St. John's has won StatSheet's Big East Freshman of the Week.
Dieng was tops in the Big East in rebounding (13.5 per game). He also put up respectable numbers with 11.5 points per game, 70% shooting, and 3.5 blocked shots per game. The Louisville sophomore played well in wins versus Villanova and Seton Hall.
Dieng totaled 12 points and 13 rebounds in 37 minutes in an 84-74 win against Villanova. In the next game he led rebounding with 14 points and added 5 blocked shots in a 60-51 victory against Seton Hall.
This is the second time this season that Gorgui Dieng has been named StatSheet Big East Player of the Week. He has also received an honorable mention. The runner-up this week is Notre Dame sophomore Jerian Grant. Honorable mention goes to Jae Crowder, a senior from Marquette. James Bell was the highest ranking player from Villanova, finishing ninth.
StatSheet Big East Freshman of the Week: St. John's's Maurice Harkless
Maurice Harkless averaged 37 minutes as a starter for St. John's. He led all Big East freshmen in both scoring (26.5 pts per game) and rebounding (13.0 per game). In a 78-62 win over West Virginia, Harkless led the Red Storm in scoring with 23 points and in rebounding with 13. Following that in an 83-76 loss to Duke, he led scoring with 30 points and rebounding with 13.
This is the second StatSheet Big East Freshman of the Week award for Maurice Harkless. LaDontae Henton from Providence grabs runner-up. Honorable mention goes to Andre Drummond from Connecticut. JayVaughn Pinkston was the highest ranking freshman from Villanova and finished 5th. Villanova has yet to win StatSheet Big East Player of the Week.
